PushEngage Plugin Performance Warning

Dave Hilditch
Talk to me

I’m busy working on a cool new plugin to let me chat directly with my customers. When I finally migrated the plugin over to my AWD site I found terrible performance.

I know it’s not poor performance from my code (I would be very embarrassed if it was!) so I set about finding out why AWD was suddenly running slowly.

Turns out it’s a plugin my manager John added recently called PushEngage. PushEngage lets you send browser notifications to your user – but you SHOULD NOT USE IT as the performance is dreadful at the moment.

Take a look at this video to see how bad performance becomes – this is on an 8GB RAM Digital Ocean droplet with 4-core CPU and yet the plugin adds about 30 seconds to page load.

  1. Very interested to find out more about hullo.
I typed some feedback into it but thought I would paste it here as I wasn’t sure if hullo was storing any of my comments.

Would like more info published on Hullo. For example, do site owners need to be online to reply? Could this automatically post the chat into the comments of the post that Hullo is over (if comments are open and enabled, of course).
It would be good to configure some intelligence in there too, such as being able to suggest potential posts that the reader might be interesting based on the content of their question.
Also, just notice that the CSS on Safari is putting the blue start of the speech bubble outside the bounds of the hullo box.
I do hope these messages are being stored somewhere. As no one is online, it feels like I am talking to myself. Not a good experience for visitors. It needs some feedback to the submitter that their question is being saved.
Another cool feature would be to support member sites and to see which members are online and then message them.
I hope that colours and branding could be changed too to match site style.
When it first appears on WP Intense, the cookie acceptance box obscures it. Maybe move the cookie box to the top of the screen?
