It prevents thumbnails being generated completely if you import to the postmeta field external_image_url – this is by far the fastest way of importing products.

There’s a feature upgrade coming to Scalability Pro to give an extra speed boost to imports to automatically figure out which product sizes this import needs – e.g. Woo products need 2 image sizes really, maybe 3 – but often people have 20+.
