We use External Image plugin in blendzshoes.nl. We import products using WP All Import plugin, and use External Image plugin for the product images (instead of downloading the images).
This is what we have set in WP All Import – https://www.screencast.com/t/85fU1XH7oi71
There you’ll see [mapImages] function which basically concatenates two or more image URLs.
The issue we have is that, it creates lots of entries (without actual images, kind of blank entries) in media table. You can check the screenshot below. There are lakhs of entries now already and because of this our site is getting very slow.
Are those entries in media table necessary? How do we take care of this issue?
Let us know if you need any other info. Thanks!

Hi – I’ll get an update for this. This technique was introduced to fix issues in some themes but I’ll need to find a better fix if you’re finding it’s slowing down your site.
Note: I’m not seeing it slow down in my test environments with 800,000 products, but I’ll investigate and figure out a better way of implementing this so your media directory isn’t flooded.
Also note: The images are not actually stored locally, it’s just an entry in the database which is then overruled using the entry in wp_postmeta
